scrap the hard times

October 28th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Today is a special day. It marks the anniversary of a rather traumatic even in our family.

Two years ago today…

It was a beautiful Fall day.

We enjoyed the picnic and drive up the mountain.

It was time to come home, but we made one more stop.

Everyone scrambled up the cliff to see the squirrel.

Including the youngest Boy (6).

The rocks were loose.

The Boy fell back, large rocks following.

One decided to land with all it fury squarely on the middle finger of his right hand.

“Near Amputation” (as stated on the emergency room report)

55 minute drive to the hospital.

Blessed hand surgeon.

Emergency surgery.

One lucky Boy. One Lucky Finger.

There is still work to be done. But the Lucky Finger is alive and well.

Throughout the whole, long, emotional ordeal, the last thing I though of was documenting it. But luckily my husband had the forethought to bring the camera to every doctor appointment, dressing change, physical therapy appointment…even to the emergency room. We took the first picture shortly after morphine was administered, the Boy was stable, and we had regained a smidgen of composure.

When I first looked back at those layouts, it was with pain, regret, guilt, sadness. But as time goes by, I begin to feel thanks, courage and pride. I think… hmm, I know…it is important to journal the hard times, along with the good. You see how far you’ve come. You count your blessings and realize how much worse it could have been. You whisper a prayer of thanksgiving for the people who helped you through.

Hard time happen. Journal them.

So true! We’ve been through some tough times and my journal remains a written witness to them. To this day there are some pages I can’t read without crying, but always with a thankful heart. It is so good to see “from whence we’ve come…”

This is so true. Thank you for the reminder, Nicole. (Hopefully, I will get to scrap again someday…)

That is awesome advice and insight! I got tears as I read your story … and am seriously impacted by your words, “To see how far you’ve come.” Thank you for sharing!
